CLEVELAND CLINIC GLOBAL PEAK PERFORMANCE CENTER (GPPC)

Function: World's largest and advanced sports training, global performance, and medical research center. It also serves the general public, offering multidisciplinary team services in cardiology, neurology, nutrition, psychology, and genetics.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The 210,000-square-foot facility set to open in 2027, designed by Populous and located on the Cuyahoga River, will be one of the world’s largest and most advanced sports training global performance centers. The performance center will also serve the general public, offering multidisciplinary team services in cardiology, neurology, nutrition, psychology, and genetics”. This facility will be conveniently located near the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice facility and will hold architectural significance in the city of Cleveland.  

This project consists of both Precast and Vrecast. After Splendid Engineering Inc. noticed that the original 4” thick precast wall solution spanning 14ft height resulted in a profile that was insufficient to meet the wall panel structural integrity requirements, it was brought to the attention of design team about the importance of Vrecast. The original total wall thickness and its constraints created a significant challenge, as the interior CFS wall had to stay behind the structural steel columns without occupying any further interior space. To stay on schedule and avoid expensive redesigns, Splendid Engineering Incorporation proposed the efficient solution to design team using Vrecast system without compromising the space and obtain the full structural integrity within the original wall section constraints to meat performance and durability standards. The Vrecast Wall Panel System proved to be the perfect choice to accommodate cladding structural performance and thermal resistance, all while reducing the wall sectional properties to meet project requirements. The design team and general contractor got back to us after few months and decided to move forward by noticing that the Vrecast wall panel system is the best solution for this application.  

The Vrecast system was the only best option that did not require further reconfiguration to meet the structural and architectural requirements.  This is a prime example of Splendid Engineering’s improvisational skills and ability to work with contractors on site-specific needs. While Vrecast wall and floor system offers a versatile range of solutions, its ability to meet the most efficient solutions and its production flexibility will make this a standout choice for many different structural and cladding applications for buildings than most competitors.

THE CHALLENGE

A project of this scale requires simultaneous excellence: structural integrity, thermal performance, and architectural precision. Traditional construction methods meant long timelines, heavy logistics, and on-site complexity that risked compromising the final vision.

The objective: Complete the landmark facade faster, deliver superior structural and thermal properties, and integrate complex MEP services, all within a demanding slim wall profile.

ROLE OF VRECAST

The VREcast system was selected to meet the project’s demanding structural and aesthetic criteria while accelerating construction:

  • Composite Components: Cold-formed steel (CFS) is structurally integrated with concrete using Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars for effective structural integrity, thermal efficiency and durability.

  • MEP Management: Features within the CFS to accommodate all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services within the limited spacing between 6″ metal studs.  

  • Architectural Adaptability: Panels produced with smooth form finish without compromising on performance or constructability
